Save the date! The ESPA Congress 2017 will take place from 10-13 May 2017. Watch-out for further details coming your way in January. But for now we are happy to announce that this year we have two congress venues. 10-11th May: ESPA meetings, get-together

ESPA became member of the EU Platform for action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health
Recently ESPA became member of the EU Platform for action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health. Together with other European-level umbrella organisations, ESPA acts to tackle negative trends in diet and physical activity by submitting and maintaining at least one active commitment. ESPA commited to fight against obesity. The idea is that, led by the Commission, the platform will provide an example of coordinated action on this problem by different parts of society that will encourage national, regional or local initiatives across Europe.

First annual conference of the Roman Thermal
First annual conference of the Roman Thermal Spas of Europe Marketing Cooperation
On 24 and 25 November 2016 the Roman Thermal Spas of Europe had their first annual conference since they were transferred to a Marketing Cooperation after the EU funding phase from February 2016. The conference took place in Badenweiler, in the German Black Forest. The project partners gathered to talk about activities and strategies for the future and introduced new member destinations.

ESPA participation in EHTTA meeting in the European Parliament
In the middle of September ESPA representatives took part in a EHTTA meeting in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The project Thermal Atlas of Europe was presented by EHTTA. The project aims to become a database of natural, cultural and intangible resources. The EHTAA president, Giuseppe Bellandi, thanked ESPA for being present in the meeting and highlighted the importance of a future cooperation.
As 2018 is going to be the European Year of Cultural Heritage, here a potential link can be found and relevant contacts were made.

Quality in Health Prevention encounters great interest
The newly founded international association "Quality in Health Prevention" (Quhep), a network of tour operators, health insurance companies, providers certified by EuropeSpa med and international associations, already enjoys a high degree of popularity. At the General Assembly on 19 September nine new members were accepted into the association.

10 years of certified quality
10 years of certified quality
EuropeSpa is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year! The company originated from a quality initiative of the European Spas Association that had the objective to create cross-border transparency for health tourism all over Europe. EuropeSpa was founded in 2006 and assumed the task of developing international quality standards, carrying out audits and seminars as well as awarding certificates. Three providers have been certified for 10 years:

Lázně Bělohrad
Spa Hotel Royal, Mariánské Lázně

10 years and Third annual congress of BUBSPA

On the 27_ 28th of September 2016, The Third Annual Congress of the Bulgarian Union of Balneology and SPA Tourism was held at Varna Grand Hotel in Sv. Sv. Konstantin i Elena Resort. During this event, guests and representatives from the European SPA Association (ESPA) took active part. Moreover, this milestone attracted Bulgarian experts and more than 10 European countries. The forum was held under the slogan “Prevention in Bulgarian SPA resorts. Tendencies in Europe 2020. SPA and culture since the Roman Empire till nowadays”. The natural healing power of the sea is used as Thalassotherapy since the ancient greek times. Now the seaside resorts and thalasso spas in the North expierence a renaissance.

The combination of sea water and the specific related climate is the success story. Fresh sea water, algae, mud and salt are the basis for baths, inhalations, massages etc. Accompanied by long walks on the beach and in the coastal forest. The ESPA member Hotel Vejle Fjord in Denmark is now offering Thalassotherapy as well.

112th German Spa Association "Bädertag" Bad Nauheim

The 112th "Bädertag" took place in Bad Nauheim from 20-22 October 2016 and focused on the spas and health resorts as competent health destinations of today and tomorrow. On this occation the ESPA President, Thierry Dubois, took also the opportunity to give a speech to the members of the German Spas association and emphasised his presidency focus.

15th European Tourism Forum
On the 11th October 2016 in the beautiful city of Bratislava, Slovakia in co-operation with the European Commission the 1th edition of the annual European Tourism Forum will be held. The Forum will be focused on three priority areas:
- A Favourable Business Environment for the Competitiveness of the EU Tourism Sector – Taxation;
- Collaborative Economy in the Tourism Sector;
- Digital Transformation in the EU Tourism Sector.

Impulse Paper No. 9 has been commissioned by the European Commission to examine the impact of regulatory approaches targeting collaborative economy in the tourism accommodation sector in the cities of Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris.

Conference on cross-border healthcare Directive
A conference on cross-border healthcare Directive “Towards amplified awareness of EU rights to cross-border care” was held on 24th November 2016. The aim of the conference is as follows: Improving information provision to enable patients to cross-border healthcare; fostering better coordination between NCPs; amplifying NCP cooperation with patient organisations, healthcare providers and healthcare insurers for the benefit of patients. Dr Gabriella Berki made a presentation and concluded that access to information is necessary in order to empower patients. The further details about the report of the conference here.

16th – 17th February, Sustainable Tourism for Rural Development conference in Bergamo (IT)
The conference on "Sustainable Tourism for Rural Development" that will take place in February in Bergamo (Italy) is a co-effort between the European Federation of Rural Tourism - Eurogites  representing the professional tourism side, and the EU-wide umbrella "MER" for civil society stakeholders related with rural development. The common objective is to "jump out of the box" of a traditional rural=farm tourism understanding, and open the view for mutual benefits both to the tourism industry and rural areas through a more dynamic and market-orientated approach.
JA-CHRODIS Final Conference
Registrations for the final conference of JA-CHRODIS are currently open, which will be organized on the 27-28 February 2017 at the Thon City Centre Hotel, Brussels. The main focus of this event will be the work of JA-CHRODIS and outputs and on the bigger view of the challenge of chronic diseases across Europe. JA-CHRODIS’s primary goals are: to reduce the burden of chronic diseases, promote healthy living and active ageing within Europe. UNWTO World Tourism Barometer
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has released their UNWTO World Tourism Barometer issue of November 2016 in English. According to release, there has been a 4% increase of international tourists worldwide between January and September 2016, compared to same period in 2015. In Europe, this increase counts for 2% in destinations such as: Spain, Hungary, Portugal and Ireland. This led to the growth of Northern Europe by 6% and Central and Eastern Europe by 5%, while results were weaker in Western Europe (-1%) and Southern Mediterranean Europe there was no change (+0). China is the world biggest source market, with (+19%) growth in spending. On the other hand, Germany represents a 5% increase in expenditure, the United Kingdom, a 10% increase, and France, 3% growth. These statistics reflect preliminary data reported to date and are subject to revision.

European Tourism Trends and Perspectives
The 3rd Quarterly report European Tourism in 2016: Trends & Prospects (Q3/2016) has been published this November by the European Travel Commission. Thee economic analysis and forecasts are provided by Tourism Economics. From the report it can be seen that despite geopolitical tensions, European travel demand continues to grow across the majority of markets and Intra-European travel remains crucial for future growth.
